Quay lại, xem lại

We are invited to witness a journey through the mountainous region of Northwestern Vietnam and Hanoi, retracing a path taken by the artist’s grandfather half a century ago. Nguyen draws on this connection to their grandparents to piece together memories that were and memories that could have been, confronting the grief of being separated from family when immigrating.

These powerful photographs document both Nguyen’s return to their homeland as an adult, as well as the spaces their ancestors inhabited, offering a glimpse into their lives and the world they inhabited.

As viewers follow along on this journey, through the remote mountains as well as the familiar city streets of Hanoi, Nguyen asks us to consider our own connection to home, and the impact of culture and tradition on our lives. Through this process, we may gain a deeper understanding of the people and places that shaped us.

This exhibition is hosted at Dzo Viet Eatery and a part of the 27th Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival Open Call.
